As we approach the election, the polarizing figure of Donald Trump continues to split the nation and the conservative movement. This episode delves into the fervor surrounding Trump's candidacy and the shift from principled opposition to emotional coercion among his supporters.
We explore the rational arguments of those who support Trump out of genuine concern for a liberal presidency, particularly one led by Kamala Harris. However, we also critique the vitriolic behavior of individuals who now attack those refusing to back Trump, despite their previous denunciations of him.
Conservatism, at its core, is not a monolith but a lens through which diverse views can be formed based on shared principles. The episode contrasts the Burkean conservative values of tradition and prudence with the reactionary populist mindset, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and shared values in building a lasting social order.
As the election nears and the prospect of a Trump loss looms, the episode examines the emotional and vitriolic reactions from his supporters. We discuss the need to move away from radicalism and focus on reclaiming conservatism from populist demagogues, emphasizing intellectual rigor, respectful debate, and principled stands.
Join us as we navigate the conservative crossroads, seeking to build a future that reflects the best of conservative ideals and ensures a stable and prosperous society for generations to come.

Yesterday, I did a Twitter Space that was mostly about Kamala Harris but led into a quick discussion about changes in cultural views. My cohost Free and I delved into the intriguing question of why our culture and society seem to be shifting ever more leftward. Free posited that this leftward drift begins with the presidency and trickles down through the layers of government and society. I, on the other hand, highlighted a more foundational issue: the role of education in shaping the minds of our children, making them more receptive to radical ideas. Our educational institutions are the crucibles in which the future of our nation is forged. It is within the classrooms of K-12 schools and the lecture halls of universities that the values, beliefs, and critical faculties of young minds are cultivated. Over the years, these institutions have undergone a profound transformation. Kirk lamented the decline from an education system rooted in the humanities and the nurturing of critical thinking to one that resembles little more than daycares, warehousing children until they are deemed ready to join the workforce.Education, particularly in its early stages, has an outsized influence on culture, both passively and actively. From a passive standpoint, the mere structure and content of education shape the perspectives and attitudes of students. When curricula prioritize rote memorization and standardized testing over critical thinking and the humanities, students are trained to accept information uncritically. They become accustomed to a passive reception of knowledge, which conditions them to accept societal norms and media messages without question.Actively, education influences culture through the explicit content that is taught and the values that are promoted within the classroom. In many schools, there is a noticeable shift towards curricula that emphasize social justice, environmentalism, and other contemporary issues from a particular ideological perspective. This one-sided approach indoctrinates students rather than educating them, shaping their worldview to align with specific ideological tenets. The role of teachers and educational administrators cannot be understated in this active shaping of culture. Educators, consciously or unconsciously, impart their own beliefs and values to their students. This is particularly impactful at the early stages of education, where children are highly impressionable. When teachers present certain ideas as incontrovertible truths rather than subjects for critical examination, they mold the cultural and ideological landscape of the future. The media amplifies these educational influences, reinforcing the messages and values promoted within schools. The synergy between education and media creates a powerful feedback loop that perpetuates and intensifies cultural shifts. Mass media, with its vast reach and persuasive power, often mirrors and magnifies the ideological leanings introduced in the classroom, embedding them deeper into the fabric of society. The preservation and enhancement of our educational institutions is crucial for the maintenance of our cultural integrity. If we embrace the wisdom of thinkers of the past and champion the cause of critical thinking and historical literacy, we can ensure that future generations inherit a society that values intellectual rigor and thoughtful discourse. This, above all, is the legacy we must strive to leave behind.Croaky’s Substack is a reader-supported publication. In this episode, we delve into a troubling trend within the conservative movement: the willingness to sacrifice core principles for political expediency. We discuss how abandoning our values for short-term gains undermines the very foundation of conservatism and erodes trust among supporters.Through historical examples like Cincinnatus and modern figures like Ronald Reagan, we illustrate the importance of steadfast adherence to principles. True leadership, we argue, is defined by a commitment to enduring truths rather than transient victories.Join us as we explore why maintaining our commitment to individual liberty, limited government, and the rule of law is essential for building a stable and just society. We emphasize that real success in politics lies in wielding power consistently with our highest ideals, inspiring confidence and loyalty in our supporters.Let us stand firm in our principles, for they are the bedrock of our movement's enduring strength and integrity. Vote as your principles demand, and resist the temptation to compromise for the sake of expediency.

It is a truism that the most resilient and principled leaders emerge from the crucible of adversity. The Republican Party, at its best, has been forged in such fires. The trials and tribulations that accompany a massive electoral defeat are not merely setbacks but opportunities for profound renewal. The cult of MAGA, with its singular focus on one man devoid of substantive ideology, must be consigned to history's waste bin for conservatism to flourish once more. The founding of the Republican Party itself was born from the ashes of profound national crises. In the mid-19th century, as the Whig Party disintegrated, a coalition of anti-slavery activists and free-soilers coalesced to form the GOP, grounded in the principles of liberty and human dignity. The party's ascent was marked by the election of Abraham Lincoln, who, in the face of unparalleled national strife, exemplified leadership and moral clarity.Fast forward to the late 20th century, the Republican Party once again found itself at a crossroads. Following the tumultuous 1960s and the disillusionment of the Watergate era, conservatism appeared to be in retreat. Yet, it was during this period of perceived decline that Ronald Reagan emerged, a leader whose vision and steadfast commitment to conservative principles revitalized the nation.Today, we find ourselves in a similar moment of introspection. The MAGA movement, while initially energizing a significant portion of the electorate, has devolved into a cult of personality devoid of substantive ideology. It has masked itself in the trappings of conservatism but lacks the foundational principles that define true conservative thought. As we look ahead to a potential Kamala Harris presidency, we must prepare for the leaders who will emerge from the aftermath of a MAGA defeat—leaders who will restore the Republican Party to its philosophical roots. The path to revitalizing conservatism will require new voices and unwavering principles. It will demand men and women of intellect and integrity, ready to fight for first principles in the face of radical populism. In every era of turmoil, the Republican Party has found its way back to its core values through the emergence of leaders who embodied resilience and principled conservatism. From Lincoln to Reagan, history has shown that true conservatism and Republicanism itself thrives in times of crisis. Today, as we confront the hollow spectacle of MAGA, we must look forward to a future where the party, tempered by defeat, can once again rise to embody the principles of liberty, human dignity, and moral clarity.

Welcome to another episode of Firing Lane, where we switch our selector from safe to semi and watch our lane. I'm your host, Croaky Caiman, and today we're diving deep into the heart of conservatism, standing on the shoulders of giants who have shaped our philosophy and guided our principles.
In this episode, I want to pay homage to a towering figure in conservative thought, whose personality and voice continue to resonate with me, William F. Buckley Jr. Buckley was more than just a political commentator. He was a master of wit, intellect, and unwavering principle. His legacy on firing lanes set the gold standard for civil discourse and rigorous debate.
Often when I write, I think about conservatism, and I think about William F. Buckley, and my inner monologue is his voice, which guides me through a lot of the insights that I come with. These insights are not my own but those made by men of the past whom I remember or find, and I bring them up to get to where I'm going on most topics.
For a bit of fun and tribute, I'll be reading a short piece I've written in Buckley's distinctive voice. My attempt to mimic Buckley is an affectionate caricature. I can't hold a candle to his brilliance, nor shine his shoes. My aim is to get you to seek out the real Buckley, whose episodes of Firing Line are available for free on YouTube. I strongly encourage you to watch them.
In Buckley, you'll find a paragon of conservative thought, much like visionaries such as Edmund Burke and Russell Kirk, who were transformative in their own eras. Now, let me dive in. Here's a piece that I wrote today that encapsulates the enduring importance of principles in our political journey, with my terrible attempt at channeling William F. Buckley.
Thank you for listening to this very short bit of a podcast that I just threw out there for fun. Stay tuned for more insightful discussions on Firing Lane. Switch your selector from safe to semi and watch your lane.
